joint that is fixated, "locked up", or not moving properly. To give an adjustment the chiropractor
will place his/her hands along the spine and give a quick ‘push” or thrust. This adds motion to
the joint, helping the bones gradually return to a more normal position and motion. The
purpose of this safe and natural procedure is improved spinal function, improved nervous
system function, and improved health.

Chiropractors are the most highly trained and skillful professionals in adjusting or
manipulating the joints of the spine and other joints in the body. After years of training and
clinical experience, each chiropractic doctor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety
of adjusting approaches, making chiropractic care safe and effective for the whole family.

Chiropractors have developed many different techniques for adjusting or manipulating the
joints. Usually the doctor's hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a gentle brief
and highly-accurate thrust. Some adjusting methods are quick, whereas others require a slow
and constant pressure. Most people are familiar with the manual adjustment that produces a
sound, or audible, such as is heard when popping the knuckles. The types of techniques
associated with manual manipulation are typically Diversified and Gonstead Techniques.
There are other techniques that do not result in an audible and are not as forceful. Cox
Technique allows the doctor to stretch or traction the joints of the spine to restore normal
motion. Drop Table or Thompson Techniques use a special table that allows manipulation to
occur using less force applied to the body. Activator Technique utilizes as special instrument
to provide the manipulation with extremely low force.

Dr. Wiles is experienced with all these techniques and use them routinely. He will determine
which techniques are best depending on your individual needs and circumstances. If you have
concerns about manipulation we would be pleased to provide additional information so that
the care you receive will be comfortable for you.
